Preparing Your Vehicle for Storms: Safety Tips from Premier Auto Care

Stay Prepared, Stay Safe.

With Hurricane Helene approaching Florida, we want to provide some helpful tips for keeping both you and your car protected during these severe weather conditions. All though the storm will likely hit the other side of the state, it’s expected to bring lots of strong wind and rain to us over on the Space Coast, hopefully these quick tips could make all the difference.

1. Check Your Tires

Before the storm hits, make sure your tires are in good condition. Bald or under-inflated tires can reduce traction, increasing the risk of hydroplaning in heavy rain. Inspect tire pressure and tread depth. Consider replacing worn tires.

2. Inspect Wipers and Lights

Visibility can be significantly reduced during a storm. Ensure your windshield wipers are functioning correctly, and that your headlights, taillights, and brake lights are all operational. Replacing wiper blades and checking that your lights are bright will help you stay safe if you have to drive through heavy rain.

3. Fill Up Your Tank

In case of evacuation or power outages, having a full gas tank is crucial. Gas stations might close or run out of fuel, so be proactive and fill up early.

4. Protect Your Vehicle

If possible, park your vehicle in a garage or under cover to protect it from high winds, flying debris, or potential flooding. If you don’t have access to covered parking, avoid parking under trees or near power lines.

5. Emergency Kit

Consider packing an emergency kit for your vehicle, including essentials like a first-aid kit, flashlight, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, a phone charger, and extra batteries. Having these items on hand can help if you get stranded or need to evacuate in a hurry.

6. Know Your Route

If evacuation is necessary, be sure to know your route and stay updated on road conditions. Flash floods and downed trees may block roads, so having an alternative route in mind can save you time and keep you safe.

7. Avoid Driving Through Floodwaters

It only takes a few inches of water to cause damage to the engine, the brake rotors, and power steering. Even worse, make you lose control of your vehicle. If you encounter a flooded road, turn around. Water can hide sinkholes or deeper areas that can stall or sweep away your car. Remember the phrase: “turn around, don't drown.”
